(89) Gary Simpson 49 + 1 apps 3 goals
Signed in October 1993 "Simmo" was perhaps one of the most high profile signings ever made by the Eagles. At the age of 32 Gary appeared more than capable of continuing his illustrious career at a much higher level than NCEL Div One but he was somehow attracted to joining Arnold Town to help our push towards a second successive promotion.
"Simmo" started out at Stoke City in 1977 spending three years in the Potteries making over 100 appearances for their Reserve team. Later clubs over the next 16 years were Boston United (two spells) Stafford Rangers (two spells) Weymouth, Alrincham and finally Gainsborough Trinity. Simmo was player manager at the Northolme for three years until resigning from the position on 9th October 1993, a short time before arriving at Gedling Road.
A clue to the attraction of Arna is the fact that Simpson had been a team mate of then Arna boss Ray O'Brien at Boston United in 1984/85 when both played in the Pilgrims FA Trophy final appearance at Wembley losing 1-2 to Wealdstone; "Simmo" was skipper that day. Gary's second spell at Boston started in 1989 and the following year Altrincham decided to pay out a then club record fee of £10,000 to take the midfielder to Moss Lane.
Between 1986 and 1990 Simpson won nine caps with the England Semi-Professional International side. "Simmo's" performances whilst at GR certainly lived up to the hype and he was soon a firm cult favourite amongst Arnold supporters; a class act at our level without any shadow of a doubt. His first of three goals for the Eagles came on 6th Nov. 93 in the 4-0 home win over Rossington Main. Gary's first spell at GR ended in early Oct. 94 to be followed by a brief one month spell at Hyde United making just three apps.
"Simmo" later returned to pick up his Arnold career at the beginning of the 1995/96 season before leaving to join Ilkeston Town as Assistant Manager in March 1996 whilst hanging up his playing boots after recurring achilles problems proved too much.
After retiring as a player Gary progressed to become a professional manager first as a caretaker boss of Lincoln City for 11 games in 2003/04 and later taking over at Macclesfield Town (2010-2012) following the untimely death of his close friend Keith Alexander. Simpson had been Alexander's Assistant Manager at Ilkeston Town, Northwich Victoria, Lincoln City and Peterborough United before the pair arrived at the Moss Rose Stadium.
